A brand new NHS app will change the way patients access health services, making it quicker and easier to get the health services you need. The new app is the perfect way to celebrate the NHS’ 70th birthday and it will be available to download on both Apple and Android phones from December.

About the new NHS app

Available in England from December, the Department of Health says that

“patients will be able to secure a GP appointment with the click of a button, rather than join a queue of callers attempting to ring the local surgery at the same time each morning.”

What will the new NHS app allow you to do?

The new NHS app will boast a number of great features, allowing you to do things such as:

Book a GP appointment

Using the app, you’ll be able to book an appointment without having to go to the surgery or wait in a phone queue. This will make it easier to book those morning appointments and means you won’t have to wait for the surgery to open to be able to book.

Order repeat prescriptions

It can be difficult to remember to order your prescription, but it’ll be even easier with the app at your fingertips. Set a reminder in your calendar to order your prescription and then order instantly on your phone – with no need to phone your GP surgery.

View test results

Waiting on a test result? Now you can access your results discreetly and easily on your phone. A good way to manage long-term health conditions, the app will allow you to take charge of your health wherever you are.

Get help for urgent care

The new app will allow you to access 111 from your mobile. This can put you in touch with our out of hours services helping to ensure you get the help you need with urgent healthcare issues.

The benefits of the new app

While you might find many of the features are already available to you via different websites, having them all together in one place will make it easier to manage your health with your local GP surgery. Bringing simple, accessible services to your phone will make it straightforward to manage your health, practice better self-care as well as help your NHS services to improve. In the same way that you can book medical appointments, you can also cancel them at the touch of a button when they’re no longer needed.

Security features will also place the NHS app above its competition, keeping your data secure as well as allowing you to see the data that is held for you in your medical file.

For GP practices, it is hoped that many patients will take up the app and use it regularly, freeing up waiting times and helping people to avoid unnecessary appointments altogether, thanks to the 111 symptom checker.

The new NHS app will be available towards the end of the year, but in the meantime, you can dial 111 for non-emergency medical issues to get the advice you need.
