We have recently collated all the responses from members of the public who have taken the time to fill in our Patient Satisfaction Survey. We’d like to extend a big thank you to all of you. We are extremely pleased with the results and what you had to say about our services. It seems the large majority of you are extremely happy with what we’re doing here at East Berkshire Primary Care Out Of Hours Service.
You had many positive comments to put forward about our service. In particular, we heard from a significant number of parents and guardians who felt our service offered a more convenient and pleasant alternative to A&E for their children.
We wanted to take this opportunity to highlight those areas of our services that you felt work well and offer benefits for children and families.
“This Centre is convenient especially [for] small children and babies who are very unsettled and can’t wait for [their] GP surgery to open or go to hospital especially for things like ear/chest infections. I would definitely recommend this service.”
“This is an invaluable service for us. Could not fault it. It has changed our life knowing our babies could be seen without having to wait 4 hours and in a waiting room full of very sick people. The GP we have dealt with here have been excellent.”
Those of you who are parents will be able to relate to how difficult it can be when your child comes down with an illness when your doctors surgery is closed. Sitting in A&E with a child who is distressed and in pain for a prolonged period can be stressful, unpleasant and time consuming. Our Primary Care Centres provide you with the facility you need to get your children seen without the hassle of waiting in A&E if you know your child’s condition isn’t life threatening. All you need to do is call NHS 111, explain your child’s symptoms and if they are considered to be minor or non-urgent, they will suggest the best course of action which could be a Primary Care Centre.

As we explained in a recent blog article on Safe Medicines For Children, children require a completely approach to medical treatment and extra care needs to be taken when prescribing them with any drugs or medication. As such, parents can sometimes be unsure about whether their child’s symptoms are minor or potentially serious. It’s not always easy to know how best to treat them. The NHS 111 line means that someone is always on hand to give you the advice and reassurance that you need. By explaining your child’s symptoms, you will be advised on where you need to go and who you need to see to get the best possible treatment for your child. If you are referred to a Primary Care Centre, the call operators will arrange an appointment for you in advance, so you don’t have to sit around waiting with your child.

It is commonplace nowadays for both parents to be working full time hours. Finding the time to take your children to a GP can be difficult. We are finding that our out of hours service is becoming increasingly valuable to working families in particular.
